Chief Constable of the Greater Manchester Police v Wigan Athletic AFC Limited
The Court of Appeal has held (Maurice Kay LJ dissenting) that a football club is not obliged to pay for a level of policing that has been provided in circumstances where it has made clear from the outset that it is not prepared to pay for it, notwithstanding that it has received the benefit of that level of policing. -
Seldon v Clarkson Wright & Jakes
This is the first EAT decision on whether a compulsory retirement age is a partnership deed is justifiable. The EAT has given detailed guidance on many of the issues surrounding objective justification. -

The Court of Appeal has thrown out the SFO's most expensive ever prosecution and lifted reporting restrictions. -
R (Downs) v Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
The High Court has given judgment in the landmark judicial review of Government pesticides policy brought by award-winning pesticides campaigner Georgina Downs (who runs the UK Pesticides Campaign), in relation to the effects of crop-spraying on rural residents. -
R (London Borough of Hillingdon and others) v Lord Chancellor (Law Society and NSPCC intervening)
A challenge by four local authorities, supported by the Law Society and NSPCC, to the Lord Chancellor’s decision to increase court fees for public law family proceedings has been dismissed by a three-judge Administrative Court. -
R (Binyam Mohamed) v Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs
On 22nd October 2008 the Court handed down its third judgment, staying the case until 13 November 2008 to enable consideration of disclosure issues by the US Federal Court who are hearing a habeas corpus claim by Mr Mohamed. A further judgment is expected in due course dealing with whether parts of the closed judgment should be made public. -
