Philosophical Belief Discrimination
Oct 11
Southampton Employment Tribunal
Ivan Hare appeared successfully at a 3-day hearing in Southampton Employment Tribunal on behalf of the animal rights activist and former hunt saboteur, Joe Hashman. The Tribunal held on 26 October 2011 that Mr Hashman had been discriminated against on the grounds of his philosophical belief in the sanctity of life and, in particular, his opposition to hunting by the Directors of Orchard Park Garden Centre when they terminated his services. Orchard Park had previously sought to overturn the Tribunal’s earlier decision that Mr Hashman’s beliefs did not qualify for protection under the Regulations.
