R v Morley, Chaytor, Devine and White

Jun 10

Lord Pannick QC and James Segan acted for the Crown in successfully arguing that Article 9 of the Bill of Rights 1689 did not prevent the prosecution of three former MPs and a Peer accused of expenses fraud.  On 11th June Mr Justice Saunders, sitting at Southwark Crown Court, delivered a ruling in which he concluded that there was "...no logical, practical or moral justification for a claim for expenses being covered by privilege; and I can see no legal justification for it either".  The Defendants are mounting an appeal against the ruling, which will soon be heard in the Court of Appeal.
