Launch of new publication: ‘Extreme Speech and Democracy’
26 Apr 09
Ivan Hare and James Weinstein have co-edited a new book titled, Extreme Speech and Democracy
Published by Oxford University Press, Extreme Speech and Democracy explains how a commitment to free speech is a fundamental precept of all liberal democracies. The book examines highly topical issues raised by extreme speech in liberal democracies such as incitement to terrorism, homophobic speech, Holocaust denial, veiling controversies and the Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed. In addition, it confronts difficult philosophical and political questions faced by democracies in their commitment to equality and the fight against hate speech, and includes interdisciplinary approaches from law, philosophy, history, psychology, and literature.
