Charles Flint QC acted as mediator in the settlement of the claims brought by Abdul-Hakim Belhaj and his wife Fatima Boudchar against the Rt Hon Jack Straw, The Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and others.
The claims arose out of the rendition of the claimants to Libya in March 2004 and their subsequent detention by the Libyan authorities. On 10 May 2018 the Attorney General made a statement in the House of Commons acknowledging that intelligence had been shared which had contributed to the detention and rendition of the claimants, and apologising on behalf of the Government for the appalling treatment suffered by the claimants. Abdul-Hakim Belhaj did not seek compensation. The Government agreed to pay compensation to Fatima Boudchar.
