Luka Krsljanin is an experienced commercial barrister. He regularly acts in contractual disputes, business claims, trusts claims, shareholders’ disputes, insolvency-related matters and fraud claims.

Luka specialises in large-scale, high-value commercial disputes, often taking place on the international scale, including offshore litigation. He acted in a series of cases arising from the 1MDB corruption scandal, spanning the English, US and Malaysian Courts. He is now acting in Jafar v Abraaj Holdings & Ors, a high-profile financial dispute in the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands which relates to the collapse of the Abraaj Group, a private equity platform valued at US$13.6 billion.

Recent highlights include CDW Ltd v Bird, a civil fraud claim, in which Luka secured freezing injunctions, asset disclosure orders and orders for attendance at court to be cross-examined.

In addition to his leading commercial disputes practice, Luka has a strong sports litigation practice and often acts for sportspeople; clubs; regulators and sponsors.

  • Acting for a Respondent in Maranello Rosso v Lohomij BV & Ors [2022], a Court of Appeal case, listed to be heard in June 2022, which concerns the proper construction of a settlement agreement (appeal from [2021] EWHC 2452 (Ch)).
  • Advising on Financial Fair Play issues in top-flight football [2022].
  • Acting for Defendants to a claim concerning the creation and ownership of a leading cryptocurrency application; in which it is alleged that the Defendants unlawfully excluded the Claimant from a shareholding [2022].
  • Acting for Newcastle United FC in a major arbitration against the Premier League regarding the sale of the club [2021].
  • Acting for a Lichtenstein bank in a claim brought by the Ukrainian Deposit Guarantee Fund under s.423 of the Insolvency Act (DGF v Bank Frick [2021] EWHC 3226 (Ch) and ongoing).
  • Acting for Sheffield United Ltd in the widely publicised ownership dispute between the club’s 50/50 shareholders ([2019] EWHC 2322 (Ch)).

Before being called to the Bar, Luka worked as judicial assistant to the UK’s judge at the European Court of Justice, gathering experience of complex competition and jurisdiction cases. Prior to that, he excelled academically, obtaining the third highest First Class in Law in his graduating year at the University of Cambridge (2012).




Luka is a leading specialist commercial junior with considerable expertise of significant, heavyweight civil and commercial litigation including a number of cases valued in excess of £1 billion.

He is routinely instruct to act as Sole Counsel, having regularly appeared unled in High Court trials and interim applications since 2016. His experience includes a range of urgent, without notice applications.

Luka has particular expertise in tackling disclosure disputes in complex commercial litigation. He has appeared in a number of the leading authorities on legal professional privilege and related disclosure issues in recent years, in the High Court and Court of Appeal. He is regularly instructed to lead on the issue of disclosure, and has gained praise from instructing solicitors for taking a hands-on approach to challenging discloses exercises.

Luka is routinely instructed as Sole Counsel in urgent, injunctive matters, including without notice applications. Within the last year, he has acted in applications seeking:

  • Imaging Orders;
  • Doorstep Delivery-Up Orders;
  • Worldwide Freezing Orders;
  • Mandatory Injunctions;
  • Norwich Pharmacal Orders.

As well as acting unled in such cases, Luka has considerable experience as part of large teams tackling major fraud claims, including a number of cases valued in excess of £1 billion.

In 2021, the Legal 500 identified Luka as one of four "rising stars" in Sports Law, saying that "with his clear deep knowledge and understanding of Sports Law, Luka will go far in this field". He has since been ranked as a Leading Junior; one of the most junior barristers in the central rankings for Sports Law.

Luka deals with disputes in a range of sports but "is particularly sought after for his expertise in football cases" (Legal 500, 2022) and is frequently instructed by leading football clubs.

Recent football clients include: West Ham United FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Newcastle United FC, Brighton & Hove Albion FC, Fulham FC, Watford FC, Sheffield United FC, and Rennes (Stade Rennais) FC.

Luka has acted in a range of commercial disputes in different offshore jurisdictions, including the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands and the Courts of Bermuda. Most of his experience arises in the fraud and enforcement contexts. He is currently instructed in FSD proceedings in the Cayman Islands concerning a major international fraud.
