Case involving a claim for infringement of copyright in a music track. Andrew Alcee, the writer of Ant'ill Mob's hit 'Burnin' was claiming that the lyrics "laid over" the top of the defendants remix of the song constituted "derogatory treatment" of the copyright.
Mr Justice Lewison ruled that rap lyrics should be treated as a "foreign language" after admitting that he was unsure what "shizzle my nizzle" and "mish mash man" meant. The Judge agreed with Robert Howe of Blackstone chambers (Counsel for the defendant) that evidence on the phrases was "not sufficient", and the claim was dismissed.
