On 3 October 2012, the Secretary of State for Transport announced that the competition to run trains on the West Coast Main Line would now be cancelled following the discovery of significant technical flaws in the way the franchise process was conducted. Accordingly, the Department for Transport would no longer be contesting the judicial review proceedings brought by Virgin Trains Ltd.
