The Court of Appeal has held that the UK government could not lawfully refuse to register Guantanamo Bay prisoner David Hicks as a British Citizen. The Secretary of State had appealed against the December High Court decision of Mr Justice Collins that Hicks, an Australian, was entitled to be registered as a British Citizen. That decision paved the way for the Guantanamo Bay detainee to call on UK officials to lobby for his release. Michael Fordham successfully appeared as the lead advocate for Hicks in both the November 2005 High Court case and in the March 2006 Court of Appeal hearing.
