High profile case in which the judge, Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss granted convicted child killer Mary Bell a lifetime protective injunction thus affording her permanent anonymity. Bell, who was 11 years old at the time she committed her crimes, was given a temporary secret identity when freed from prison in 1980. The protection afforded by this secret identity was extended until her daughter's 18th birthday last year. Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss extended the injunction for both X and Y for the duration of their lifetimes on the basis that Bell, now 46, and her daughter could be targeted by vigilantes if their identities were revealed. The Court had to take account of the tensions created by the competing interests of Article 8 (protection of the physical and psychological integrity of an individual) and Article10 (the rights of freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
