The Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued a decision on Friday 18 February 2022 sanctioning the Team GB sprinter, Chijindu Ujah, for an Anti-Doping Rule Violation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Team GB’s sprint relay team had finished in silver medal position at the Final of the 4 x 100m event on 6 August 2021. After the Final, Mr Ujah underwent doping control and returned an Adverse Analytical Finding. His case was referred to CAS by the International Testing Agency (ITA) on behalf of the IOC. ITA applied for CAS to disqualify (i) his results in the 4 x 100m sprint, (ii) his results in any other events at the Tokyo Games; and (iii) Team GB’s results for the sprint relay Final.

During the proceedings, Mr Ujah maintained that he had not knowingly or intentionally doped, and that it appeared that the source of the prohibited substances was the ingestion of a contaminated supplement.

Nevertheless, the CAS ADD Sole Arbitrator considered that an anti-doping violation had been committed and imposed the sanctions requested by the ITA.

Nick De Marco QC and Ravi Mehta were instructed by Centrefield LLP on behalf of Mr Ujah.
