James is credited for nurturing an “exceptionally diverse practice”. The Lawyer states that “2022 allowed Segan to flourish as a silk” highlighting his work for the SFO in claims against ENRC, for professional golf players regarding the LIV Golf series and Ocado.

Please find The Lawyer’s full write-up for James below. The full list of members of The Lawyer’s Hot 100 2023 can be found here.

“James Segan KC is certainly no one-trick pony. Taking silk at the age of 38 in 2020, Segan has nurtured an exceptionally diverse practice. He practises in telecoms, media and entertainment, sport, intellectual property, European, competition law, public law, and procurement.

Segan came to the Bar because he craves the intellectual challenge and has a love of advocacy, but his diverse practice has meant that he is unique in how he argues cases. A common theme of his practice is the intersection between business and regulation, which might be statutory regulation or government regulation in areas such as procurement or telecoms, or self-regulation as in sport. But this practice crossover has helped Segan generate the points that win hard-fought lawsuits.

2022 allowed Segan to flourish as a silk. He appeared in the explosive case against Dechert and Neil Gerrard, led by Simon Colton KC, and is now leading for the SFO in ENRC’s latest claim against it and will continue to do so in 2023. He also acted for Ocado in defending a claim by Autostore, and successfully sought a suspension to penalties imposed by the European Tour for golfers’ participation in LIV Golf events for professionals such as Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood.”
