James Segan successfully represented The Rugby Football Union before the independent National Anti-Doping Panel concerning Brandon Staples’ positive test for three steroids.

Mr Staples, a professional rugby player who played for Yorkshire Carnegie, argued that the urine sample that returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) was due to a nutritional drink he consumed while in South Africa. He is the first professional rugby union player to test positive for a performance enhancing substance since 2011.  He was suspended for a period of four years from all sport following the hearing.

The original decision was upheld on appeal.

James Segan appeared on behalf of the RFU at both the first instance and appeal hearings.
