Following his recent appointment to the Attorney General’s Senior Treasury Counsel Group, Tim Otty KC was, on 13 December 2025 elected Vice President of the Council of Europe’s Commission for Democracy through Law – the Venice Commission. Tim has been the UK member of the Venice Commission since 2019.
The Commission is the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional matters. It comprises 61 members: the 46 Council of Europe member States, plus 15 others embracing States in the Americas, Asia and North Africa as well as 4 observer States.
The role of the Venice Commission is to provide legal advice to its member States and other States, in particular, to help those States wishing to bring their legal and institutional structures into line with European and international standards in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, please see more information here.
Alongside his Treasury Counsel role, and this appointment, Tim continues in full time private practice at the Bar.
